Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions that come up before booking a guided sea kayak tour around Auckland, from how booking works to what happens in bad weather. Everything here comes from the tour pages and operator details gathered for this site.
Booking And Payment
How Do I Book A Tour?
Every tour card has a Check availability button. Clicking it opens the booking page for that tour, where you choose a date and pay. Auckland Kayak Tours does not take bookings itself.
Can This Site Change My Booking?
No. Auckland Kayak Tours is a comparison site and has no access to bookings, payments or operator systems. Changes, cancellations and date moves go through the booking page or the operator.
Are The Tours Run By This Site?
No. The tours are run by four operators: Auckland Sea Kayaks, Social Nature Movement, Canoe & Kayak Adventures and Clearyak NZ. This site only compares them.
Who Do I Contact On The Day Of The Tour?
The operator named on your booking confirmation. The operator decides whether a tour goes ahead in the conditions and handles all practical questions on the day.
Prices And Cancellation
Are The Prices Per Person?
For 13 of the 14 tours, yes. The exception is the "Clearyak Rental, 30 or 60 Minutes" at Goat Island, which is priced at $72.13 per double kayak for up to two people.
Can I Cancel For Free?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start is stated on all 14 booking pages. On the five Auckland Sea Kayaks tours, the operator's own terms differ: cancelling more than 48 hours before departure brings a refund less a 25 percent admin fee, and within 48 hours or a no-show there is no refund, so read both the booking page and the operator terms for those five.
What Do The Tours Cost?
Per-person from-prices run from $62.48 for the "Riverhead Tavern Paddle" to $1,008.18 for the two-day "2-Day Waiheke Island Kayak" with camping. The median across the 13 per-person tours is $83.80.
Do Prices Change?
From-prices can move with dates and seasons, and the booking page shows the live price for the date you pick. The figures on this site were gathered in one data pull and may lag behind the page.
Choosing A Kayak Tour
How Are The Tours Grouped?
Into five categories with these counts: Rangitoto Island Kayak Tours 2, Volcano Island Paddles 2, Night And Bioluminescence Kayaking 3, Harbour, City And Pub Paddles 4, and Island And Marine Reserve Kayaks 3.
Which Tour Suits A First-Timer?
The three Auckland Sea Kayaks island tours, the "Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto", the "Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto" and the "Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle", each state they suit people with little or no kayaking experience. The "Est. 1994 Bioluminescence Kayak" uses stable sea kayaks or sit-on-tops with full tuition.
Can Children Come?
Minimum ages vary by tour and sit on the card: 14 on both Rangitoto paddles, 12 on the "Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle" and the "City Lights Night Paddle", 13 on the "Tiritiri Matangi, 6 to 7 Hours", 11 on the "Coastal Brewery Kayak" and 3 on the Goat Island rental. Several tours state no minimum age.
What If The Weather Is Bad?
The operator decides on the day within strict wind and sea limits. If the operator cancels for weather, the operator terms say full refund or reschedule. No operator promises a glow; two tours say it is never guaranteed.
Is There A Tour With A Meal Or A Drink At The End?
Yes. Both Rangitoto paddles are catered, one with a BBQ dinner and hot drink, the other with a BBQ lunch.
